Why is there no "Buy Photo" button next to the photo I'd like to purchase?
Reasons Cascadia Daily News will not sell a photo
Phone photo - Not every reporter has access to a high-quality DSLR-style camera; many use phones to take photos. The company we use to process prints, Fotomoto, does not accept photos taken with phone cameras.
We don't own sales rights to the image - CDN republishes photography and images from other organizations, such as Associated Press or Washington State Standard to supplement our storytelling. Our photo use agreement with the outside organization does not allow for the sale of the image on our platform. This also applies to images originating from community members, groups, businesses, government, or non-profits. Please contact the credited organization or individual associated with the image for usage permission.
Freelancer photo - The photo was taken by a freelancer. Freelancers use a different photo storage system than we do at CDN, and it would be logistically difficult for Cascadia Daily News to process a high-quality photo.
Photo of a child - The image contains a child or children under the age of 14.
Sensitivity to the subject of the photo - Cascadia Daily News covers a range of stories, some of which are lighthearted and fun. Others can be emotionally heavy. Out of respect for the human subjects of our stories, we sometimes withhold certain images from sale.
Anonymous sources - While Cascadia Daily News strongly prefers to publish information from sources on the record, CDN occasionally publishes information and stories sourced from people who, for their own reasons, choose not to share their names. This is always done with careful vetting and consideration from our editorial staff. Often, in imagery associated with these stories, we see subjects with their faces obscured by darkness or a silhouette. Out of respect for the anonymity of these sources, we chose not to sell these particular photos. For information on how we handle anonymous sourcing, please contact CDN's executive editor Ron Judd, at ronjudd@cascadiadaily.com.
Older photos - The photo is older, and we haven't put it in the system yet, or the photo came from a photographer who is no longer working at Cascadia Daily News and it would be difficult to find a higher-quality version of the image.
